AFC Mobile to Play 2017 Home Games at Lipscomb Athletic Complex

AFC Mobile, Mobile’s minor league soccer team, proudly announces that it will play its inaugural 2017 season home games at the Archbishop Lipscomb Athletic Complex located in the heart of Mobile.

Owned by the Archdiocese of Mobile and operated by McGill-Toolen Catholic High School, the stadium was named for Archbishop Emeritus of Mobile Oscar Hugh Lipscomb and opened for gridiron football in 2008. Nicknamed “The Lip,” the stadium seats 5,000 people and serves as a multipurpose stadium with a sprinturf field. McGill-Toolen plays its home football and soccer games there, and the stadium has also been used as a practice facility for Mobile’s Dollar General Bowl and the Senior Bowl. One of the premier athletic venues in the State of Alabama and on the Gulf Coast, The Lip is located in the Bolton neighborhood of Mobile off Michael Boulevard near I-65 and Montlimar Drive.

Nate Nicholas - Head Coach

AFC Mobile announces Head Coach for Inaugural Season

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATE NICHOLAS NAMED FIRST AFC MOBILE HEAD COACH

AFC Mobile is proud to announce Nate Nicholas as the first head coach of AFC Mobile. Nicholas is a longtime member of the Mobile soccer community and is currently the head coach of the McGill-Toolen boys soccer team.

“I am extremely excited about being the first head coach of AFC Mobile. There are many qualified coaches in this area and to be the first one to get this thing kicked off is honoring and humbling. I just want to do the team, the board, and more importantly the supporters justice in leading them in this first season.” Nicholas said.

Nicholas played soccer at the University of Mobile from 1998-2003 and won an NAIA national championship with the Rams. Nicholas has coached at the Alabama School of Math and Science, Baldwin County High School and UMS-Wright before making the jump to McGill-Toolen. He won back to back state championships with UMS-Wright in 2010 and 2011. He was named the Press-Register Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2011 and the Sports Academy Coach of the Year in 2010. Last year, his McGill-Toolen team finished with a record of 20-6-3 after falling to Oak Mountain 2-1 in the 7A state championship game. The Jackets are currently ranked fifth in the state with a record of 6-2-2.

“Having a manager the caliber of Nate Nicholas was vitally important for AFC Mobile in our inaugural season. Actually getting Nate on board is even better. Nate is a name that holds weight in not just Mobile soccer, but in Alabama soccer as well.” AFC Mobile president Abram Chamberlain said. “He has continuously proven himself to be an incredible manager at both UMS and McGill-Toolen and having played in the PDL and for the University of Mobile means he knows what it will take to not just compete, but to win at this level. Coach Nicholas has proven that he has a style of play and the tactical knowhow to implement that system of play. We are ecstatic to have him leading us on our first ever GCPL campaign.”

After coaching in the area for the past 15 years, Nicholas knows that Mobile is full of soccer talent and wants to help those players reach their full potential.

“My goal for AFC Mobile is to provide a team for the people of Mobile to get behind and be able to support.” Nicholas said, “I want it to be a place for players who want to reach the highest levels to have a place to play. I want to find players who grew up in Mobile and want to play for Mobile and I also want to find players who are new to Mobile but want to have an outlet for their talents.”

AFC MOBILE TO JOIN THE GULF COAST PREMIER LEAGUE IN 2017

GCPL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

AFC MOBILE TO JOIN THE GULF COAST PREMIER LEAGUE IN 2017

Mobile, Alabama, January 3, 2017 – AFC Mobile is proud to announce that it will join the Gulf Coast Premier League for the 2017 Summer season. This will be the first time Mobile has played host to a United States Soccer Federation sanctioned soccer team since 1997.

“There has been a lot of excitement since we first came up with this idea,” said AFC Mobile board member Abram Chamberlain. “Since we launched the club in 2015, we have spent a lot of time trying to figure out where Mobile fits best into the interesting dynamic that is America’s soccer pyramid. When it came down to all aspects considered, the Gulf Coast Premier League felt like the best, most exciting fit for us. We are thrilled to be entering an accredited USASA elite league that gives us fantastic local competition and a shot at playing in the [Lamar Hunt U.S.] Open Cup.”

The Gulf Coast Premier League was founded in 2016 to foster high level competitive soccer and grow the burgeoning soccer community along the Gulf Coast. The GCPL is one of 12 leagues sanctioned as an Elite Amateur Premier League by the United States Adult Soccer Association. Each year, the GCPL’s champion is awarded a place in the Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup, the second oldest soccer tournament in the world which every amateur and professional team in the country is eligible to compete in. The league currently features teams in New Orleans, Biloxi and Lafayette.

The Gulf Coast Premier League will keep it’s USASA Elite Amateur Premier League status and look to further grow into a recognized regional league. “We wanted to test the waters before jumping in head first with this project.” said league President, Jeremy Poklemba “With all of our teams from the prior two years itching to get back out on the field, and the ambitions of our newest clubs, we feel this is just the beginning.”
